Central Utah Writing Project (CUWP) is affiliated with the National Writing Project and serves as a resource to help Utah teachers become more proficient teachers and writers. It is modeled after practices originating with the Bay Area Writing Project, founded by Jim Gray in 1974. CUWP is housed at Brigham Young University and serves the school districts throughout central Utah.

The model of the NWP is one that values teacher knowledge and facilitates sharing knowledge and resources.

In CUWP, teachers can expect to work with other teachers who are interested in improving students’ writing and their own writing instruction. And teachers can expect to have fun doing it!

Dr. Deborah Dean, Professor of English at Brigham Young University (BYU), serves as the CUWP director. She is assisted by Chris Crowe, Professor of English at BYU, and by Joseph Wiederhold and Chris Thompson, teachers from local schools. Contact information for our directors can be found below.

Three core activities govern the model of a Writing Project site:

  • Teachers teaching one another.
  • Teachers reading and discussing relevant educational literature and research.
  • Teachers writing and sharing their writing.
