Northern Virginia Writing Project (NVWP) ’12; CUWP ’20

Since I was the self-appointed editor of my family newsletter as a 4th-grader (and probably even before then), I have oriented to the world as a writer and a writing teacher. This journey has led me to teaching high school English in Northern Virginia for 10 years after completing my BA in English Teaching at BYU. It was then that I became familiar with the National Writing Project, participating in a four-week summer institute with the Northern Virginia Writing Project (NVWP) in 2012. Since then, my affiliation with NWP, including being able to direct CUWP since 2022, has led me to every meaningful professional opportunity I’ve had, and many dear personal and professional friends. 

I now teach preservice teachers in the English Department at BYU and love the way the CUWP fellows I work with continue to teach me about the joys and challenges of teaching writing and writers in 2026 and beyond. My first book, Teach Like a Writer: Composing Community, Curriculum, and a Career Worth Keeping, will be published by NCTE in Spring 2027 and is informed by everything I’ve learned about writing and teaching throughout my career and especially the Writing Project.
